Ferdinand The Bull (Non-Alcoholic)

Another beef bouillon cocktail, this one served cold, is the non-alcoholic version of the Bull Shot or something like it with tomato juice. I'm using low sodium tomato juice because there's plenty of salt in the bouillon and other sauces. Really, this is pretty much a stripped down Virgin Mary, and you can enjoy it for the beefy flavor that it has.
  • 4 oz. tomato juice
  • 4 oz. beef bouillon
  • 1 oz. lime juice
  • Tabasco sauce to taste
  • Worcestershire sauce to taste
  • ground pepper
  • lime slice
Shake all ingredients except pepper and lime slice in a shaker with ice. Pour into a highball glass and garnish with ground pepper and lime slice.

Sleeping Bull (Non-Alcoholic)

This is a perfect drink for cold mornings when you need help with combating a cold. The Sleeping Bull is a non-alcoholic version of the Steaming Bull, which is made with tequila. It is still plenty hot and spicy and does the trick when you need something to loosen a cold's grip on your sinuses.
  • 4 oz. beef bouillon
  • 4 oz. tomato juice
  • Tabasco sauce to taste
  • 1/4 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • celery salt to taste
  • 1/2 oz. lime juice
  • ground pepper to taste
Combine all ingredients in a saucepan and heat slowly--do not boil. Pour into a heat resistant mug.

Cafe Au Lait (Non-Alcoholic)

So simple, I'm surprised it is even in the New York Bartender's Guide. I've learned, however, that a bartender needs to know how to serve coffee as well as alcohol, and I've applied a little knowhow to this recipe to make it more special for drinking at home.
  • black coffee
  • hot milk
  • sugar to taste (demerara used)
Heat milk in a saucepan on low temperature--do not boil. Add sugar to milk and whisk until it dissolves. Once heated, whisk milk to produce foam. Pour hot coffee in a mug and use a spoon to add milk foam to the top of the coffee.

Stanley Spritzer (Non-Alcoholic)

The best non-alcoholic or mocktail drinks are ones that can fool you because they are tart or spicy enough to stand in for an alcoholic drink, or at least look like one so your friends think you are getting drunk. The Stanley Spritzer definitely has you covered for the latter, but it is refreshing and tangy. The best part is that it is easy to make and can be ordered at just about any bar.
  • 2 oz. lime juice
  • 2 oz. orange juice
  • ginger ale
  • lime slice
Build drink in a Collins glass with lime and orange juice. Add ice and top with ginger ale. Garnish with the lime slice.

Spiced Iced Coffee (Non-Alcoholic)

I think I'm going to need a category of caffeinated drinks for this blog. A non-alcoholic coffee cocktail has completely the opposite effect of most of the cocktails I am doing. I can work these in in the morning and switch to alcohol in the evening.

Anyway, spiced coffee is always a good idea. And since the weather is unpredictable, you can do this one hot or cold as needed. As the recipe stands, you have to steep the pot of coffee in the fridge, so you might as well have it cold. Whipped cream is not a requirement, as seen in the photo, but it is so much more of a treat. With this recipe, you can have coffee shop style coffee at home!
  • 32 oz. hot black coffee
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 12 whole cloves
  • 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • peels of 2 lemons and 2 oranges cut into thin strips
  • 4 sugar cubes
Mash together spices and fruit peels in a heat-proof container. Add hot coffee, stir and chill. Serve over ice in a highball glass.

Tea Sandwich (Non-Alcoholic)

I see where this drink is going. You want something that tastes a bit like those cute cucumber sandwiches at English tea parlors. The drink gets its body from cucumber and its liquid from pineapple juice, which has an amazing ability to taste like anything you want it to depending on what it is mixed with. Herbs make this a bitter treat.
  • 4 oz. pineapple juice
  • 4 oz. chopped cucumber
  • 4 watercress sprigs
  • 1 sprig fresh mint
  • 1 sprig parsley
  • 1/2 tsp. lime juice
Combine all ingredients in a blender with ice. Blend until smooth and pour into a Collins glass and garnish with cucumber slices and mint.

Carolina

What a strange cocktail with such an incongruous name. If there is a contemporary equivalent, it would have to be the Cinnamon Toast Crunch with Rumchata and Fireball Whiskey. Without these select products available decades ago, mixologists must have come up with this drink to imitate the flavor of cinnamon toast.
  • 3 oz. gold tequila
  • 1 oz. half-and-half
  • 1 tsp. grenadine
  • 1 egg white
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • ground cinnamon
  • maraschino cherry
Combine tequila, half-and-half, grenadine, egg white and vanilla in a shaker with ice. Shake and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Sprinkle with cinnamon and garnish with the cherry.
